EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CRYO

Join us today, Wednesday, May 6, at 4 p.m. EDT with Lou Sagar, CEO of The Alchemist’s Kitchen at the Kollectiv, for the #insideskoop on cold therapy.

It’s finally getting warmer out, thank God. But this week, we’re going deep into cold therapy, aka cryotherapy. Now stay with us: Wim Hof, aka The Iceman, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts and ran a half marathon in the Arctic Circle barefoot in pursuit of a younger version of himself—meaning a body without inflammation, swelling, or pain. We aren’t recommending all that, but exposing yourself to extremely cold temperatures for just a couple minutes can promote detoxification and increase circulation.

“Cryotherapy is used to stimulate the body’s ability to heal,” says Ben Feinson, cofounder and CEO of #skoopcertified Cryofuel.  “It’s used by top-level athletes and weekend warriors, but even your grandparents can do it.” Whole Body Cryotherapy involves standing in a chamber with subzero temperatures for three minutes. The freezing cold triggers your body’s fight-or-flight response, shooting energy to your organs and speeding up muscle recovery (check out our cofounder Riley in a session above).

Lou Sagar, CEO of #skoopcertified The Alchemist’s Kitchen, our favorite botanical dispensary in NYC, follows these steps to get his cryotherapy fix at home. He calls it the cold-out:

  1. When you’re just about finished with your shower, turn the faucet all the way to the left for 30 to 90 seconds. Make the water as frigid as possible

  2. This finale will increase lymphatic drainage and make you feel like you’ve just jumped into an ice-cold lake and, for the first time in months, we laughed uncontrollably.

More Skoop: The Alchemist’s Kitchen is open for vegan takeout, but if you can’t get there in person, they’re taking online orders, too. We love their plant-based coconut yogurt; it’s Sagar’s favorite post-cold-out snack.
